The region famed for the ancient palace of King Nestor, the ruins of which still remain, the Costa Navarino marks a palatial presence of the modern kind. Bioclimatic architecture, award-winning interior design and novel design concepts for children’s facilities form the unique nature of Costa Navarino. Inclusive of a number of distinct sites featuring five star deluxe hotels, luxury residences, and signature golf courses the resort’s philosophy is about promoting the historical region of Messinia while protecting its natural beauty.
For instance the Navarino Dunes is an expanse of 130 ha of gently sloping hillside that overlooks a one kilometre stretch of sandy beach and the blue waters of the Ionian Sea. The Navarino Dunes is the setting for The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort and The Westin Resort. At the first area of the Costa Navarino are lowrise villas, built using native stone and local design elements that merge with the natural landscape.

Bioclimatic architecture principles have found their way into the designs, which follow the region’s traditional architectural patterns such as form, volume and scale. Design features of this nature include 5,000 sqm of planted roofs, artificial ponds to improve the local micro-climate, optimal use of sunlight through the orientation of buildings, landscaping and artificial and natural shading.
The challenge of seamlessly integrating buildings into the natural landscape was overcome by means of extensive water surfaces, green and free-standing roofs, carefully planned planting of local flora species and the highlighting of the natural beauty of the beach river. Specialists in bioclimatic and low energy design the architecture of Navarino Dunes is by Alexandros N Tombazis & Associates Architects.
At the Navarino Dunes, the aesthetics of interior design is a response to the location, while drawing inspiration from the history and architectural heritage of Messinia
At the Navarino Dunes, the aesthetics of interior design is a response to the location, while drawing inspiration from the history and architectural heritage of Messinia as well. Thus, timeless architectural design is combined with contemporary furniture fittings corresponding to present day lifestyle. While the vastness of Costa Navarino posed a challenge, proper proportions in design allow guests to feel at home while smooth transitions from one space to the next is maintained. The indoor to outdoor experience is given special emphasis to make the most of the location where there are no barriers in between, from open terrace levels to shaded terraces, into interior spaces that are open to views, and then indoor areas that are intimate or ‘closed’. The aim was also to avoid overwhelming the guests and prevent an impersonal atmosphere.

Aside from the two luxury hotels, The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort and The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino, other sites of interest—The Dunes Club House, the 4,000 sqm Anazoe Spa and the Agora village centre—reflect the vision of the interior architecture and design company MKV Design.

Among the many restaurants at the Navarino Dunes, the Barbouni designed by K-Studio sits along the mile long beach. It is holistic in that every aspect of the design collectively conveys the laidback atmosphere on par with the overall design approach at Navarino Dunes. “Set upon a wooden platform its structure is formed by a grid of natural wooden columns. Amongst them, an L-shaped volume rendered in sand, sits among the “forest” of tree trunks to accommodate all the facility areas, such as kitchen, restrooms and storage. Over the table area, an inverted field of hanging fabric sheets forms the canopy that sways in the wind, allowing air to circulate and the space to remain cool. Throughout the day, dappled sunlight filters through the sheets, lighting and shading the space simultaneously. The animated ceiling resembles the waves on the beach and creates a rhythm. The combination of these purposely designed and naturally occurring elements creates a multi-sensory architectural approach, perfectly aligned with the environment, providing a natural, comfortable refuge from the elements while creating a light, sociable atmosphere.”
At Costa Navarino children can also find an escapade with high novelty to spark their imaginations at The Cocoon and SandCastle. While parents are otherwise engaged, the Cocoon is ideal for infants from four months up to three year old toddlers, and the SandCastle is a treat for young guests aged four to 12 years old. Both childcare recreational spaces reflect the high quality and aesthetics that define Costa Navarino. The Cocoon is inspired by the nature of the cocoon, and is reminiscent of space that carries life, characterised by soft shapes that surround and protect life. Fluid forms and carved underground spaces with green roofs surround a basin from which organic forms emerge. Babies and toddlers can be creatively engaged here to develop their skills in a soft nurturing environment. The buildings include accommodation, space for activities and outdoor play areas.

The SandCastle offers recreational and educational activities for older children up to 12 years of age including overnight stay options. The building has been built on the concept of a castle built in the sand drawing inspiration from the bay of Navarino and its dunes. Here the child-like gestures such as playing in the sand, sculpting and mixing are translated into architectural forms. Through the interaction among spaces, materials and colours the building presents imaginative spaces for experience and exploration. Both these childcare spaces have been designed by Polyanna Paraskeva & Associates Architects.
Amongst the many recreational activities at the Costa Navarino, the two golf courses Managed by Troon Golf are signature features at the complex. The Dunes Course, set in a diverse landscape with breathtaking views of the sea and river, is Greece’s first signature-designed golf course. An 18-hole, par 71 course, it measures 6,018 metres from the back tees and a little over 5,000 metres from the front tees and features a full-size driving range and a short-game practice area, and an impressive clubhouse including Flame restaurant among other features. Designed by former US Masters Champion and Ryder Cup Captain Bernhard Langer in association with European Golf Design, some of the shaping of the Course was created to reflect the rugged outlines of the distant mountains, and further impart the character of a traditional seaside golf course. The shaping softens as the golf course moves further away from the sea and into a more familiar Greek landscape of olive and citrus groves.

The 18-hole par 71 Bay Course designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones II, is located at the Navarino Bay nearby. The Bay Course meanders through undulating hills and lush olive groves, offering enviable views of the sea. The Course offers a challenging yet fair test to golfers of all levels.
Through design concepts, cherished landscapes, conscientious environmental practices and cultural journeys at the resort complex, it stands as a contemporary tribute to ancient Greece. A story that continues to be told.
